COLLEGE HIGHLIGHT

Amer attended college at the University of Illinois from 2000-2003. While competing for the Illini, he earned almost every award an honor imaginable. He

  • Became Illinois' first and only NCAA singles champion in 2003 when he beat second-ranked Benedikt Dorsch 6-4, 6-3 to win the NCAA title in Athens, Ga.
  • Competed for two other national titles the All-American Championship and the National Indoor Championships. Only Delic, Harvard's James Blake and Arizona State's Sargis Sargsian have reached the finals of all three events in the same season in the last ten years.
  • Propelled the Illini to an undefeated (32-0) season and the NCAA team title.
  • Earned University of Illinois Athlete of the Year and Big Ten Male Tennis Player of the Year honors in 2003. Illinois was only the fourth men's team in Division I history to go undefeated.
  • Teamed with Graydon Oliver to become the first Illinois doubles team to earn an ITA ranking of No.1
  • Was the ITA Men's National Player of the Year. This award honors the athlete who has had the most outstanding year in both individual and team competition. MaliVai Washington was the last Big Ten athlete to receive the award when he won it in 1989.
  • Earned All-American and All-Big Ten status each season he competed for the Illini.
  • Won the doubles title at the ITA All-American Championships with Michael Calkins.
  • Ended the season as the No. 2 singles player and was part of the No. 11 doubles team (w/Calkins).
  • Showed promise early on in his career as the Big Ten Freshman of the Year and UI Male Newcomer of the Year.
  • Secured a place on almost every individual Illinois record list including career singles wins (12th), singles wins in one season (5th, T16th), longest singles winning streak (4th), most career doubles wins (9th), most doubles wins in one season (T9th, T13th, T21st), most team doubles wins w/Calkins (3rd, 4th); w/Graydon Oliver (8th).
