Europe Blog Continued...

April 27 2009

I have already escaped Rhodes and am in Munich, Germany as I write this. Lost in a tough match last night to an opponent that has given me trouble in the past. Dudi Sela is a little guy, but packs a big punch. What he lacks in size he makes up and more with his speed and craftiness. Usually the plan against a player like him is to get the ball up and out of his strike zone, but with the courts being extremely slick and fast, that was very hard to do. Instead I tried simply overpowering him, but in the process made to many errors and lost.

As I mentioned previously, current stop is Munich, Germany where the conditions are as opposite as they get. From fast and reasonably warm Greece, to cold, rainy clay of Munich.

May 1 2009

I don't want to jinx it, but the weather today was awesome here in Munich. Not a cloud in the sky and about 70 degrees. Had a great day of practice on the "dirt" and really need to kick myself for not playing this tournament in the past. Or more clay court tournaments in general...

May 2, 2009

Well... I did jinx it. Even though it seemed like it was going to hold up, it sure didn't. Couple rain delays, that turned courts into a sand box, made the match more interesting. Opponent that I played today, I had zero idea about him, until we started warming up. Right away I noticed a major hitch in him forehand, which proved correct during the match. I went to that side on every big point, and it worked. Still he managed to slap some big serves and backhands, thankfully though that wasn't enough.

Next opponent is Phillip Oswalt, tall Austrian who I have seen play before and will be a good match tomorrow.
Maybe if I say that it will rain tomorrow, it might actually be sunny...

Cheers.

May 3, 2009

This reverse weather prognosis does really work! Weather was great, match was and the score was in my favor.  Served really well and took chances when I got them.

Next in line is Sascha Kloer, who I dont really know much about.

Twitter/Europe Blog

Below is the running blog that I have been "scribbling" on my phone while either on a flight, waiting at the gate or riding on the bus to the courts...

Also, I will try to hook up my Twitter (http://twitter.com/AmerDelic) to my blog so I can keep it updated on-the-go.

April, 23 2009

As I am writing this, I am 30,000+ ft in the air, flying over continental USA on my first leg of the trip to Europe; Greece to be more exact.

Tour de Europe will consist of few stops including Germany, Croatia, France, Czech Republic, back to Germany then finally London. It will be a long continuous trip, but I will try to find some time in between to visit my family that's still in Bosnia.  I haven't been back in couple years, so I am really looking forward to it.

First stop is Greece where I have never been before, but have heard only great things about it. Rhodes is the host city of the Challenger tournament, which is also known for it's tourist attractions. Hopefully I will have some time to visit some of those.

Until next time...

Rhodos, Greece

I arrived safely to Rhodes couple days ago and have been getting acclimated to the 45mph wind gusts along with the rest of the players. It could be one of the windiest places I have played at with a combination of heavy balls and super slick courts. Probably one of the worst combos known for most of the players.

April 26, 2009

Today is the first day of the main draw tournament. There are 6 singles matches on the schedule today including Brendan (Evans) and myself.
Another windy day, but by now, I have given up hope on having a calm day out here... Maybe some other Greek island, but definitely not this one.
Obviously, there could be worst things in life, including the mess that's brewing up with a "swine flu" back in Central and now North America also. That's what happens when for decades there hasn't been much food regulation. Now there is a panic....

Wind did calm down a bit and I was able to win my match. Joachim is a very tough opponent because his serve is still top 5 in the world even if he has been injured for a while.
I got lucky on few points and was able to squeeze out a win.
Now I am awaiting a winner of Dudi Sela and a local wild card.
Vacation continues...

Quick Update

Just wanted to check in quickly, because it has been a while...

I have played few tournaments since Dallas Challenger, however results have not been so great.  After my loss in Delray Beach I went ahead with an MRI on my knee and was able to find out that I have a partial tear on my Patella tendon.  Thankfully, that type of injury doesn't require a surgery, however if I played through it, tendon could have ruptured causing some serious problems.

As of right now, it doesn't look too promising for me to play Indian Wells, CA, however, I am hoping to be ready for Miami.

Next few weeks my ranking will suffer even more, because I have points coming off from last year, but as soon as I am healthy and playing again, ranking will start going in the right direction.

Back in States

Australian Open is finally over and Rafael Nadal has been crowned a champion.  As much as I wanted to see Federer win this year's Championship, you simply can't take away this feat from Rafa.  To quote a friend of mine, also known as Shooter--- "That's just tooooooo good!"

Back to reality now...

In Dallas, TX this week to try and defend my title from last year.  My first round match is tonight vs. Alex Kuznetsov and if interested, you can check it out at www.frontrowtennis.com

Also, few people have asked me why my ranking actually dropped, even though I had a good result at the Australian Open.  With the new ranking system in place, I would have to write an essay trying to explain the whole mess.  In simplest terms, points from last years tournaments (Australian Open and Dallas Challenger win) dropped off at the same time.  In some ways its good because I don't have to defend them anymore; in other ways its bad because it has already hurt my ranking.  Nonetheless, there is plenty of tennis to be played this year and plenty of points to be collected.

Last, but not least...  Check out Jon Wertheim's latest column on SI.com.  I am not the one to brag about this, but its a pretty cool write up.

Greetings from Dallas,
